Dwight Duncan and his henchmen have unilaterally decided to close the casino in Windsor and Fort Erie in a cost cutting measure that is part of a huge overhaul of the gaming industry in Ontario. The objective is to generate millions maybe billions of dollars of revenue and fill their pockets.
The slot casino deal that Woodbine has had with OLG has been in existance for 10 years at least, generating hundreds of millions of dollars for all kinds of infrastructure, services including the expansion of horse racing in Ontario. It has been a boone for horseracing. But it was from the very start a Deal with the Devil and never doubt it!
Horse racing and Slot Machines share only the vague
st connection by virtue of being gambling venues. Never confuse the ownership, breeding and competition of thoroughbreds and harness horses with the One Armed Bandits in the various casinos around Ontario. Racing is a culture, a religion for many people with the racehorse as the central deity. From Day One I distrusted this connection between Woodbine Racetrack and the OLG. When I drive into Woodbine every morning and I see the big Pattison Illuminated signage with arrows pointing this way to the slots and that way to the racetrack I always feel a little uneasy.
We survived before the slot machines and should they take them away I'll miss the revenue big time but I won't miss the machines. They are a blight on society. But horse racing should return to the horsemen and no matter how badly we've run this thing before; it still fully should belong to the horsemen and horsewomen.
I can remember that a 16000 dollar claiming racing at Woodbine had a purse of $25,000 attached to it. We made money before and prospered. We really don't need the One Armed Bandits and we really don't need Dwight Duncan. But if keeping the casino and its machines at Woodbine means keeping that Deal with the Devil going for longer with its attached infusion of millions of dollars and keeps the river of gambling dollars coming our way then I say do it! Keep it! But I won't like it anymore today than I did 10 or so years ago. I say Fight On Horsemen. We can Win! Send the Bean Counters back to the sands.
